This year, Mental Health Awareness Week was from the 14th to the 20th May 2018. POhWER local teams got involved in events and raised awareness of how advocacy supports people with mental health needs.

Read on to find out what POhWER were doing in the following areas:

Brent

POhWER attended an event in Brent held by Hestia and Ashford Place with support from Brent CCG to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing as part of Mental Health Awareness Week. The event was held in the Brent Civic Centre. We held a workshop on how to make a complaint and raised awareness of Independent Health Complaints Advocacy in London. 

There were also other workshops and taster sessions for activities, e.g singing, creative writing, chair yoga etc some of which were run by service users who are on a development path.

Brentwood

POhWER attended an event held by Brentwood Community Tree at the Hutton Village Hall. POhWER's community Development worker, Sharon, was at the event to provide information about POhWER's Advocacy services in Essex and volunteering opportunities that are available with the Essex team.

The Brentwood community tree is a site which brings together local organisations which provide support for all types of mental & physical problems, financial, stress, anxiety, grieving, addiction etc. http://brentwoodcommunitytree.org/ POhWER is just one of many providers who have joined up to this group.

Chelmsford

POhWER attended an event hosted by the NHS North Essex IAPT. It was a free Health and Wellbeing event at Anglia Ruskin University held on the 14th May. There were a range of education and wellbeing workshops that were running throughout the day. 

Clacton-On-Sea

POhWER attended an event hosted by the NHS North Essex IAPT. It was a free Health and Wellbeing event at the Albert Edward Hall in Clacton-On-Sea held on the 18th May. There were a range of education and wellbeing workshops that were running throughout the day.  

Colchester

POhWER was at the Colchester Foodbank on the 16th May as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.

POhWER's community Development worker, Sharon, was at the event to provide information about POhWER's Advocacy services in Essex and volunteering opportunities that are available with the Essex team.

Enfield

On 14th May, POhWER attended a Mental Health Foundation event at Houndsfield Road Community Centre with the Wellbeing Co (for Enfield). Among other local providers such as MIND and Age UK, POhWER London team also held a stall to raise awareness of the Independent Health Complaints Advocacy Service we run in London.

Gloucestershire

As part of Gloucestershire CCG’s Mental Health Awareness Week, POhWER was featuring on the Information Bus on 15th & 17th May. 

POhWER Staff and volunteers were providing information about Independent Mental Health Advocacy and the vital role it plays for the people of Gloucestershire who experience mental illness. There were lots of other fantastic organisations to learn about and there was an art exhibition featuring work from artists who lived with experience of mental health.

Greenwich

On 16th May, POhWER were holding a stall in partnership with Greenwich Alzheimer’s Society at a Mental Health Awareness Week event at the Woolwich Centre Library. During the event, POhWER raised awareness of the advocacy services we run in London.

Kensington and Chelsea

On 16th May, POhWER participated in the 'Celebrating our Compassionate Community' event held in the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

There were stalls from a number of local providers and a lot of fun activities during the day.

Nottingham

On 15th May, POhWER delivered a presentation in Nottingham at the Vulnerable Adults Providers Network for ‘Hidden Voices’ event. We provided an overview of our services and how we support those who traditionally have ‘hidden voices’ in Nottingham.

Facilitated by Nottingham CVS, the Vulnerable Adults’ Providers Network (VAPN) is a city-based forum for community and voluntary organisations that provide services or support to vulnerable adults in Nottingham.

Redbridge

In Redbridge, One Place East held a Mental Health and Dementia Awareness Day in partnership with Vision Redbridge at Redbridge Central Library on Tuesday 22nd May. POhWER's London IHCAS team had a stall to raise awareness of the Independent Health Complaints Advocacy service in London.

Southwark

As part of the review into Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Southwark CCG and Southwark Council hosted a Stakeholder Engagement event on 14th May.

The POhWER London Independent Health Complaints Advocacy (IHCAS) team are attended to raise awareness of IHCAS in London.

Tower Hamlets

To celebrate, Mental Health Awareness week, Community Options hosted a 'We can do it, how we do it’ - an interactive event on 14th May.

The event was a celebration and exploration of mental health and people’s journey to recovery. It was an interactive day with information stalls, workshops and taster sessions on how creativity, exercise, therapeutic activities, food, music can all contribute to healthy minds.

POhWER attended the event and raised awareness of our advocacy services in London.
