Prison ICAS

Following the expansion of POhWER’s ICAS service in April 2006, work is underway to build and strengthen relationships with prison staff and other involved stakeholders in all three of our regions. We are carrying this work forward in the following ways:

• There is a coordinator overseeing the development of this part of the service and the associated training and administrative needs.

• Each region has an identified network lead person to coordinate and drive forward the networking process in that region. The network leads are also providing useful information about national and local support agencies.

• Each region has an identified client lead person, currently supporting clients who are in prison, to provide initial guidance and support as more advocates begin to work with this client group across the service.

• These regional leads can also provide information about local variation and best contact routes for prisons in their region.

• Communication is taking place with relevant stakeholders at all the prisons and a round of meetings and presentations is currently underway.

• Each region has an identified manager who has attended the training and is kept aware of developments to aid communication and consistency.

• An initial regional training day has been held in each region for staff to understand and explore the challenges to working in this unique environment.

• Further more detailed training has now taken place and an allocation rota has been drawn up in anticipation of increased referrals generated by the networking currently taking place.

• One of our ICAS teams has agreed to take on the administration of this part of the service and to answer the helpline from that office so that we can be sure of consistent service and clear communication during this critical development phase. This change will commence by the end of March 2007.
