The Guardian - Ex-government adviser condemns health policy

16 September 2004

Tony Blair's determination to give patients choice about where they are treated is weakening the NHS and threatening the health of the nation, a former chief medical officer for England warned yesterday.

Sir Kenneth Calman, now vice-chancellor of Durham University, said the government could not boost the health of the nation without adopting more interventionist policies to improve public health.

"The tension between individual choice and the public interest could undermine efforts to give priority to public health initiatives and narrow the health gap," he said in a report co-authored by David Hunter, the university's professor of health policy and management.
