About us: Giving people a voice – and making sure it’s heard – is something POhWER does every day. We’re all about promoting equality, challenging unfairness and giving disadvantaged and vulnerable people access to high quality information, advice and advocacy services. POhWER is a registered charity that provides a range of services across England.

About the role: An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Independent Advocate to provide advocacy support to people with learning disabilities, mental illness or whose behaviour challenges on a full time basis working four days in Milton Keynes and one day in Kettering.

As an Independent Advocate you will be directly supporting people providing person centred and wherever possible, client-led advocacy to people who are in a Medium and Low secure hospital and in a care home setting.

The role will involve maintaining contact with clients in order to get to know them and/or be able to communicate with them effectively in order to establish ways of ascertaining their views, wishes and preferences and to represent them independently.

Day-to-day, the role will involve lone working but being a part of POhWER’s Secure and Complex Services team, managing a complex caseload and working in different environments. Therefore we are looking for a confident, resourceful and motivated team player, able to work well alone as well as part of a team, in partnership with clients.

About you: The successful candidate will have experience working with people with mental health, challenging behaviours, a learning disability and/or autism, as well as the ability to form positive boundaried working relationships.  The successful candidate will also have a good understanding of a range of communication methods and an ability to work with people who do not communicate using speech or who have highly individual communication styles.

We are looking for people who want to make a difference, who are committed to their own professional development and who are comfortable handling highly sensitive information, and in seeking support and supervision. Strong communication skills and time management skills will be required and you will need to be computer literate. The ability to represent our clients and our organisation in a professional way is essential.

An enhanced DBS check will be required for this post.

Because of the nature and location of the role, applicants must live within or close to Milton Keynes and or Kettering, have a full driver’s licence and access to their own transport.
