Non-Instructed Advocates (NIA’s) work with people who do not use language to communicate or find it difficult to say want they want. Wheelchair user and a child
NIA’s will go and meet the person.

NIA’s will watch the person to learn more about them. Moving house? NIA’s will then talk to the person’s family and people who live and work with them.People

NIA’s are independent. This means that they are only working for the person, not thier family or the staff.

An Example of NIA work:

A client did not want to go to a day centre.Picture - what to do today?

The NIA went to see them at the day centre and at some other places. Two people talking

This helped the NIA to see where the client liked to be and what they wanted to do.Picture - what to do today?

The NIA talked to the staff and told them what they thought.
